چکیده

We have developed a time-dependent three-dimensional model of isotropic, adiabatic, and compressible magnetohydrodynamic plasma to understand nonlinear cascades of density fluctuations in local interstellar medium. Our simulations, describing evolution of initial supersonic, super Alfvénic plasma modes, indicate that nonlinear interactions lead to damping of plasma motion. During the process, turbulent cascades are governed predominantly by the Alfvénic modes and velocity field fluctuations evolve towards a state charachterized by near incompressibility. Consequently, density field is advected passively by the velocity field. Our findings thus demonstrate that the observed density fluctuations in the interstellar medium are the structures passively convected by the background velocity field.

Turbulence in nearly incompressible fluids: density spectrum, flows, correlations and implication to the interstellar medium

Interstellar scintillation and angular radio wave broadening measurements show that interstellar and solar wind (electron) density fluctuations exhibit a Kolmogorovlike k−5/3 power spectrum extending over many decades in wavenumber space. The ubiquity of the Kolmogorov-like interstellar medium (ISM) density spectrum led to an explanation based on coupling incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD...

Three-dimensional simulations of turbulent spectra in the local interstellar medium

Three-dimensional time dependent numerical simulations of compressible magnetohydrodynamic fluids describing super-Alfvénic, supersonic and strongly magnetized space and laboratory plasmas show a nonlinear relaxation towards a state of near incompressibility. The latter is characterized essentially by a subsonic turbulent Mach number. This transition is mediated dynamically by disparate spectra...

We present multi-epoch KPNO Coudé Feed observations of interstellar Na I and Ca II absorption toward the bright star ρ Leo. Comparisons of the Na I profiles observed over a period of 8 years reveal significant temporal variations in the Na I column in at least one component, implying that there is “structure” at scales of order of the proper motion (∼12 AU). un 2 00 9 M Star Astrosphere Size Fluctuations and Habitable Planet Descreening ∗

Stellar astrospheres—the plasma cocoons carved out of the interstellar medium by stellar winds—are continually influenced by their passage through the fluctuating interstellar medium (ISM). Inside dense interstellar regions, an astrosphere may be compressed to a size smaller than the liquidwater habitable zone distance. Habitable planets then enjoy no astrospheric buffering from the full flux o...

Scaling laws in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection under different geometry

A systematic study of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is carried out in two horizontal cylindrical cells of different lengths filled with water. Global heat transport and local temperature and velocity measurements are made over varying Rayleigh numbers Ra. The scaling behavior of the measured Nusselt number Nu(Ra) and the Reynolds number Re(Ra) associated with the large-scale circulation ...
